As part of a £350,000 project to bring The Beacon Museum into the digital age, we produced a mixed media suite of 13 interactive digital display points to highlight the important events, influential characters, and bring to life the incredible history of the Cumbrian town of Whitehaven and wider Copeland area.

Our multi-disciplinary team of researchers, copy and script writers, interpretation specialists, project managers, 2D animators, 3D modellers, developers, VR specialists, hardware procurement team, sound and lighting specialists, videographers, actor casting and costume team, came together to produce a cohesive and engaging range of experiences for a diverse range of visitors.

These new digital displays go hand in hand with the museum’s more traditional offering to give the museum a multi-generational appeal.

After two years of hard work and a global pandemic to navigate, the new digital interactives were unveiled to the public in 2021 with great success, and Visit England awarded the museum their ‘Best Told Story’ Award in recognition.

The aims of the project were to tell the stories of Whitehaven’s people and history using exciting and varied XR methods, so we were thrilled to hear that The Beacon Museum team had received this well-deserved award. As Heather Holmes, Customer and Visitor Experience Manager for the museum puts it, “we’ve worked hard to be creative in the way we tell the stories of our history, so to be given this recognition is just fantastic.”

Accolades from institutions like Visit England are important, as Alan Gillon, Learning Manager at the museum explains, “the more people that come here on the back of this accolade is going to be very supportive for not just us, but other businesses in the local area.”

And Councillor Steven Morgan, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: “This recognition for the hard work done by the team at the museum is richly deserved. The recent changes to the visitor experience have really captured and engaged those who come to the museum.

To receive an award like this is testament to the team and their understanding of who comes to the The Beacon Museum and what they are looking for. Their innovation is rightly rewarded.”
